Staying Mobile with Cystic Fibrosis TreatmentsPosted on July 11, 2017

Life gets busy, with or without a chronic illness like cystic fibrosis. It is rare that anyone has an extra couple of hours in their day even with something as necessary as breathing treatments, airway clearance and all of the other therapies necessary for a person with cystic fibrosis.  As an adult with cystic fibrosis, I have had to master the art of multi-tasking, making sure to be doing as many things as I can at one time to get through my care routine and out the door each day. Being strapped to a vest machine and having to sit in one place for over an hour can certainly limit my abilities to get everything done that I need to.

Whether I am traveling or just busy at home, I have found that there are times when it is much easier for me to stay adherent with my therapies if I can be more mobile. Here are some of my tips for more mobility with treatments:

  • Take treatments in the car - some treatment machines are made to be mobile . If it plugs into the car adaptor, you can take treatments on the road.
  • Airway clearance in the car or at work or school - there are many hand-held airway clearance devices that are small and lightweight that can easily be used in the car or outside of the house.
  • There are battery operated treatment machines that do not need to be plugged into an outlet- These machines allow you to take treatments anywhere that you go.
  • There are portable vest – These allow you to move about freely during therapy because you are not connected to a machine or outlet.
  • Pillboxes are your new best friend-there are so many medications for someone with cystic fibrosis that it can make things easier to use pillboxes to keep yourself organized.  I always keep a mini pillbox with me in my purse so that if I am out and need to take my medications, I have them with me.
